1 Samuel 21-24 NLT: David Flees from Saul

1 Samuel 21: The Priestly Provision (NLT)

David, who had been anointed by Samuel to be the next king of Israel, fled from Saul's pursuit. He arrived at the town of Nob, where he met with Ahimelech, the priest. David told Ahimelech that he was on a secret mission for the king and requested food and a weapon.

Ahimelech, unaware of David's true circumstances, provided David with the consecrated bread and the sword of Goliath, which had been kept at the temple.

1 Samuel 22: David Finds Refuge (NLT)

David continued to flee from Saul, eventually finding refuge in the cave of Adullam. His family, including his brothers, joined him there. David's followers, who were distressed, debt-ridden, and discontented, also gathered around him.

When Saul discovered that David was at Adullam, he ordered his men to surround the cave. However, God protected David, and Saul's plans were thwarted.

1 Samuel 23: David Rescues Keilah (NLT)

The Philistines had attacked the town of Keilah, and David inquired of the Lord whether he should rescue the city. The Lord instructed him to do so, and David and his men successfully defended Keilah.

When Saul learned that David was in Keilah, he again planned to capture him. However, David was warned by the Lord and escaped before Saul arrived.

1 Samuel 24: David Spares Saul's Life (NLT)

David and his men were hiding in the caves of En Gedi when Saul came to the area, seeking to capture David. While Saul was in a cave, David and his men remained hidden in the shadows. David had the opportunity to kill Saul but chose not to, instead cutting off a corner of Saul's robe as proof that he could have killed him.

David confronted Saul, showing him the robe and rebuking him for his pursuit. Saul was moved to tears and acknowledged that David would one day be king.

In this passage, we see David's patience, faith, and mercy as he chooses not to take revenge on his enemy, trusting that God would ultimately vindicate him. Despite being pursued by Saul, David remains committed to honoring God and doing what is right.
