1 Samuel 16:10-12: The Anointing of David

The Search for a King

In 1 Samuel 16, we find the story of Samuel's search for a new king to replace King Saul. The Lord had rejected Saul as king because of his disobedience, and now Samuel was instructed to anoint a new king from among the sons of Jesse.

The Rejection of Eliab

In verses 10-12, we read:

"Jesse called Abinadab and presented him to Samuel. But Samuel said, 'The Lord has not chosen this one either.' Then Jesse presented Shimea, but Samuel said, 'The Lord has not chosen this one either.' Jesse presented seven of his sons, but Samuel said, 'The Lord has not chosen any of these.'"

(1 Samuel 16:10-12, NIV)

Jesse presented his sons to Samuel, one by one, but Samuel rejected each of them. The Lord did not choose any of Jesse's sons, except for one.

The Anointing of David

The story takes a surprising turn when Samuel asks Jesse if he has any other sons. Jesse mentions David, the youngest son, who was tending the sheep. Samuel instructs Jesse to send for David, and when David arrives, Samuel anoints him as the new king.

This story highlights the sovereignty of God in choosing leaders. God does not choose based on human standards of greatness, but rather on His own wisdom and purpose. David, the youngest and seemingly insignificant son, was chosen by God to be the next king of Israel.

Lessons from the Story

This passage teaches us several important lessons:

  • God sees beyond human appearances. God did not choose Eliab, the tallest and strongest son, but instead chose David, the youngest and seemingly weakest.
  • God's ways are not our ways. God's choices often defy human logic, and we must trust in His sovereignty and wisdom.
  • God is looking for a heart that is fully committed to Him. David was a man after God's own heart, and God chose him to be the next king of Israel.

As we reflect on this story, let us remember that God is still sovereign in choosing leaders and guiding our lives. May we trust in His wisdom and purposes, even when they do not make sense to us.
