1 Samuel 16:14 - The Spirit of the Lord Departs from Saul
The Context
In 1 Samuel 13:13-14, God rejected Saul as king of Israel because of his disobedience. Saul disobeyed God's command to wait for Samuel to make the offerings before going to war against the Philistines. As a result, God took away the kingdom from Saul and gave it to David, a man after His own heart.
The Departure of the Spirit
In 1 Samuel 16:14, it is written:
"But the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and a harmful spirit from the Lord troubled him."
This verse marks a significant turning point in Saul's life. The Spirit of the Lord, which had anointed Saul as king and empowered him for his role, departed from him. This was a tangible manifestation of God's rejection of Saul as king.
The Arrival of an Evil Spirit

The evil spirit brought fear, anxiety, and torment to Saul. This is evident from the fact that Saul's servants tried to calm him down by suggesting that he be entertained by music (1 Samuel 16:15-23).
The Contrast with David
In contrast to Saul, David was anointed by Samuel to be the next king of Israel (1 Samuel 16:1-13). The Spirit of the Lord came upon David in power, empowering him for his future role as king.
The contrast between Saul and David is stark. Saul, who was once anointed by God, was now troubled by an evil spirit, while David, the newly anointed king, was empowered by the Spirit of the Lord.
The Lesson
The story of Saul and David teaches us that obedience to God is crucial for our spiritual well-being. When we disobey God, we can expect His judgment, which may manifest in various ways, including spiritual oppression. On the other hand, obedience to God brings His blessings and empowerment.
