1 Samuel 1:9-28: The Story of Hannah and her Prayer
Hannah's Sorrow
Hannah, one of the two wives of Elkanah, was a woman of sorrow. She was childless, and this was a great sorrow to her. In those days, having children was seen as a blessing from God, and childlessness was seen as a curse. Hannah's rival, Peninnah, who was also Elkanah's wife, would often provoke Hannah, saying that the Lord had closed her womb.
The Vow
One day, Hannah decided to go to the temple in Shiloh to pray for a child. She was so desperate that she made a vow to God, saying, "O Lord Almighty, if you will only look upon your servant's misery and remember me, and not forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the Lord for all the days of his life, and no razor will ever be used on his head."
The Prayer
Hannah's prayer was not just a casual prayer; it was a prayer from the heart. She was so emotional that she was praying silently, and her lips were moving, but her voice was not heard. The priest, Eli, saw her lips moving and thought she was drunk. He rebuked her, saying, "How long will you keep on getting drunk? Put away your wine."
Faith and Perseverance
Hannah was not drunk, and she told Eli that she was praying for a child. She explained her situation and her vow to God. Eli, seeing her sincerity, blessed her, saying, "Go in peace, and may the God of Israel grant you what you have asked of him." Hannah believed that God had heard her prayer, and she went away, ate something, and was no longer sad.
The Answer to Prayer
The Lord remembered Hannah, and she conceived a son. She named him Samuel, which means "heard by God." She kept her vow and dedicated Samuel to the Lord, bringing him to the temple to serve God. Hannah's story teaches us that God hears our prayers, and He can turn our sorrow into joy.
