Saul's Search for Donkeys
1 Samuel 9 tells the story of Saul's search for his father's donkeys, which ultimately leads to his anointing as the first king of Israel.
The Story Unfolds
The chapter begins with Saul, a young man from the tribe of Benjamin, searching for his father's donkeys that had strayed away. Saul's father, Kish, had sent him to find the donkeys, and Saul was determined to find them. However, after searching high and low, Saul realized that the donkeys were nowhere to be found.
Meeting the Prophet Samuel
Saul decided to seek the help of the prophet Samuel, who was known for his wisdom and ability to communicate with God. Samuel had been instructed by God to anoint a king over Israel, and he had been waiting for the right person to come along.
When Saul arrived in Zuph, where Samuel was residing, the prophet was preparing for a sacrifice to God. Saul approached Samuel and asked for his help in finding the donkeys. However, Samuel had other plans for Saul.
The Anointing of Saul
Samuel revealed to Saul that God had chosen him to be the leader of Israel. Saul was hesitant at first, but Samuel convinced him that he was the one God had chosen.
Samuel took a vial of oil and anointed Saul, saying, "Has not the Lord anointed you to be prince over his people Israel?" (1 Samuel 9:16). This anointing symbolized God's appointment of Saul as the king of Israel.
The Signs of Kingship
Samuel told Saul that he would experience three signs that would confirm his kingship:
- Meeting two men near Rachel's tomb: Saul would meet two men who would tell him that the donkeys had been found.
- Meeting three men near the oak of Tabor: Saul would meet three men who would offer him two loaves of bread.
- Prophesying with a group of prophets: Saul would prophesy with a group of prophets, and the Spirit of God would come upon him.
The Confirmation of Kingship
Saul experienced all three signs, and his faith was strengthened. He returned to his father's house, and the Spirit of God came upon him, causing him to prophesy among the prophets.
This chapter marks the beginning of Saul's reign as king of Israel, and it sets the stage for the rest of the book of 1 Samuel.

- God's sovereignty: God is in control of our lives, and He chooses who He wants to use for His purposes.
