David's Victory Over the Amalekites
In 1 Samuel 30:1-31, we find the story of David's victory over the Amalekites, a group of people who had raided the city of Ziklag, burning it to the ground and taking the women and children captive.
The Situation
David and his men had been living in Ziklag, a city in the land of the Philistines, where they had been granted refuge by Achish, the king of Gath. While David and his men were away, the Amalekites, a group of nomadic people, raided Ziklag, burning the city and taking the women and children captive. When David and his men returned, they found their city in ruins and their loved ones gone.
David's Response
David was devastated by the news, and his men were angry and frustrated. But David did not give in to despair. Instead, he sought the Lord's guidance and strength. He asked Abiathar, the priest, to bring the ephod, a sacred vestment worn by priests, and inquired of the Lord what he should do.
The Battle
The Lord told David to pursue the Amalekites, and He would give him victory. David and his men set out, following the trail of the Amalekites. Along the way, they came across an Egyptian slave who had been left behind by his Amalekite masters. The slave told David about the Amalekite raid and led them to the Amalekite camp.
David and his men launched a surprise attack on the Amalekites, and the Lord gave them a great victory. They recovered all the spoils that the Amalekites had taken, including their wives and children, and they also took additional spoils from the Amalekites.
The Division of the Spoils
After the battle, David and his men returned to Ziklag and divided the spoils among themselves and the men who had stayed behind to guard the city. David also sent a portion of the spoils to the elders of Judah, saying, "Here is a gift for you from the plunder of the Lord's enemies."
