1 Samuel 28 Vers 5

1 Samuel 28:5: The Desperate King Saul

The Background of the Story

In 1 Samuel 28:5, we find King Saul in a desperate situation. The Philistines have gathered their armies and are preparing to attack Israel. Saul, who has been rejected by God as king, is fearful and anxious about the impending battle.

The King's Desperation

The Bible says that Saul was "afraid of the Philistines" (1 Samuel 28:5). This fear was not just a rational response to a threatening situation, but a deep-seated fear that came from knowing that God was no longer with him. Saul had disobeyed God's command to destroy the Amalekites, and as a result, God had rejected him as king.

In his desperation, Saul turned to a medium, a witch of Endor, to try to contact the spirit of the prophet Samuel. This was a foolish and sinful act, as Saul knew that consulting mediums was forbidden by God.

The Consequences of Disobedience

Saul's actions in 1 Samuel 28:5 demonstrate the consequences of disobedience. When we reject God's will and way, we open ourselves up to fear, anxiety, and desperation. We try to find solutions to our problems in our own strength, rather than trusting in God's sovereignty.

The Contrast with David

In contrast to Saul, David, who would later become king, trusted in God's sovereignty and guidance. David's faith was rooted in his relationship with God, and he looked to God for deliverance and guidance in times of trouble.

The Lessons for Us Today

What can we learn from 1 Samuel 28:5? Firstly, we learn that disobedience has consequences. When we reject God's will and way, we open ourselves up to fear, anxiety, and desperation.

Secondly, we learn that our strength and deliverance come from God alone. When we trust in Him, we can face any situation with courage and confidence.

Thirdly, we learn that seeking solutions to our problems in our own strength or through sinful means only leads to more trouble. We must seek God's guidance and deliverance in times of trouble.

As we reflect on 1 Samuel 28:5, let us be reminded of the importance of obedience to God's will and way. Let us trust in His sovereignty and guidance, and seek His deliverance in times of trouble.
