1 Samuel 28:7-20: The Witch of Endor
The King's Dilemma
In 1 Samuel 28:7-20, we find King Saul in a state of desperation. The Philistines have gathered their army to fight against Israel, and Saul is terrified. Despite having banished all mediums and spiritists from the land (1 Samuel 28:3), Saul now seeks out the help of a witch who can summon the spirit of Samuel, the prophet who had anointed him king.
The Witch of Endor
Saul disguises himself and goes to the witch of Endor, asking her to summon Samuel's spirit (1 Samuel 28:8). The witch, sensing Saul's presence, is frightened, but Saul assures her that she will not be harmed (1 Samuel 28:10). She then summons Samuel's spirit, and Saul asks for guidance on how to defeat the Philistines.
A Glimpse of the Future
Samuel's spirit appears, and Saul trembles with fear (1 Samuel 28:13-14). Samuel rebukes Saul, saying that God has turned against him and that the Philistines will triumph (1 Samuel 28:16-19). Samuel also prophesies that Saul and his sons will die in battle the next day (1 Samuel 28:19).
Consequences of Disobedience
This passage highlights the consequences of Saul's disobedience to God's commands. Saul had repeatedly disobeyed God, and now God has rejected him as king (1 Samuel 15:23, 28:16-18). The witch of Endor, who was supposed to be abolished from the land, becomes the only resort for Saul in his desperation.
Lessons from the Story
This story teaches us about the dangers of disobeying God's commands and the consequences that follow. It also reminds us that seeking guidance from outside of God's will can lead to further trouble. Moreover, the story showcases the sovereignty of God, even in the face of human rebellion.
Application to Our Lives
As Christians, we can learn from Saul's mistakes. We must be obedient to God's commands and seek guidance from His Word. When we disobey, we open ourselves to the consequences of sin. May we strive to live according to God's will, and may we seek guidance from the Holy Spirit, rather than seeking help from outside sources.
