1 Samuel 28-29: The King and the Medium
The King's Desperation
In 1 Samuel 28, we find King Saul in a desperate situation. The Philistines have gathered their armies to fight against Israel, and Saul's own army is trembling with fear. Despite his earlier mistakes, Saul knows that he needs God's guidance and protection. However, because of his disobedience, God had withdrawn from him.
The Visit to the Medium
In desperation, Saul turns to a medium, a forbidden practice in Israel (Leviticus 19:31, Deuteronomy 18:11). He disguises himself and visits a medium in Endor, asking her to summon the spirit of Samuel, the prophet who had anointed him as king. The medium, surprised by the appearance of Samuel's spirit, cries out in fear, realizing that she has been deceived.
Samuel's Rebuke
Samuel's spirit rebukes Saul for his disobedience and reminds him of God's words through him: "The Lord has torn the kingdom of Israel from you today and has given it to one of your neighbors—to David, one of your neighbors, who is better than you" (1 Samuel 28:17-18). Samuel also prophesies Saul's defeat and death, along with his sons, in the upcoming battle.
The Fear of the Philistines
In 1 Samuel 29, the Philistines, unsure of David's loyalty, question him about his intentions. David, who has been living among the Philistines, convinces them that he is willing to fight against Israel. However, the Philistine lords refuse to let him join them, fearing that he might turn against them during the battle.
David's Departure
David, relieved by the Philistines' decision, returns to Ziklag, only to find that the Amalekites have raided the city, taking the people and livestock captive. David, with the help of his men, sets out to pursue the Amalekites, rescuing the captives and recovering the stolen goods.

The story of 1 Samuel 28-29 serves as a reminder of God's justice and faithfulness. Saul's disobedience and desperation lead to his downfall, while David's loyalty and obedience pave the way for his future kingship.
