1 Samuel 15:22 ESV

Has the Lord as Great Delight in Burnt Offerings and Sacrifices

In 1 Samuel 15:22, we find a powerful message from the Lord to King Saul through the prophet Samuel. The verse says:

"Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to listen than the fat of rams." (ESV)

The Context

This verse is part of a larger story in 1 Samuel 15, where King Saul is instructed by God to completely destroy the Amalekites, including their livestock and goods. However, Saul disobeys God's command and spares the best livestock, intending to sacrifice them to God. When Samuel confronts him about his disobedience, Saul tries to justify his actions by claiming that he was going to sacrifice the animals to God.

The Message

In response to Saul's excuse, God speaks through Samuel, saying that obedience is better than sacrifice. This message is not saying that sacrifices are unimportant, but rather that obedience to God's voice is more important than any external act of worship.

This verse highlights the difference between external rituals and true worship. God is not impressed by our outward actions if they are not accompanied by a heart of obedience and surrender. In fact, God would rather have our obedience than our sacrifices.

The Principle

This principle applies to our lives today. We can easily get caught up in the rituals and practices of our faith, such as attending church services, praying, and giving to charity. While these actions are important, they mean little if they are not accompanied by a heart of obedience to God's voice.

In our daily lives, we are faced with choices that require us to obey God's voice. We must choose to obey His commands, even when it's difficult or unpopular. We must listen to His voice and respond with obedience, rather than just going through the motions of our faith.

The Application

So, what does this verse mean for us today?

  • Obedience over rituals: Let us focus on obeying God's voice in our daily lives, rather than just going through the motions of our faith.
  • Heart of surrender: Let us surrender our hearts to God, rather than just trying to impress Him with our external actions.
  • Listening to God's voice: Let us take the time to listen to God's voice, and respond with obedience, even when it's difficult.

May we strive to obey God's voice, listening to His commands and responding with obedience, rather than just offering sacrifices that mean little to Him.
