1 Samuel 22: Saul's Persecution of David

David at Nob and at Gath

After David fled from Saul, he went to the city of Nob, where he met with the priest Ahimelech (1 Samuel 21:1-9). Ahimelech provided David with bread and a sword, and David continued on his way to Gath, the city of the Philistines. However, David soon realized that he was not safe in Gath, as the servants of King Achish of Gath recognized him as the king of Israel (1 Samuel 21:10-15).

Saul's Persecution of the Priests

Meanwhile, Saul learned that David had fled to Nob and that Ahimelech had assisted him. In his anger, Saul summoned Ahimelech and accused him of conspiring with David against him. Ahimelech denied any wrongdoing, but Saul was unsatisfied and ordered the execution of the priests of Nob. Doeg the Edomite, Saul's servant, carried out the order, and 85 priests were killed (1 Samuel 22:9-19).

David's Anger and Vengeance

When David heard about the massacre of the priests, he was filled with anger and grief. He realized that his actions had led to the deaths of the innocent priests and took responsibility for their fate. David vowed to avenge their deaths and protect the remaining priest, Abiathar, who had escaped to David (1 Samuel 22:20-23).

David's Leadership and Saul's Isolation

As David's reputation grew, he attracted a group of 400 men who were discontented with Saul's rule. David became their leader, and they retreated to the wilderness of Judah. Meanwhile, Saul's actions became increasingly isolated, and his own people began to distrust him (1 Samuel 22:2-5).

Conclusion

The events of 1 Samuel 22 highlight the escalating conflict between David and Saul. David's innocence and good intentions are contrasted with Saul's jealousy and bloodlust. The chapter sets the stage for David's rise to power and Saul's downfall, as David becomes the leader of a loyal group of followers and Saul's own people turn against him.
