1 Samuel 12:3-5: A Call to Integrity
The Context
In 1 Samuel 12, Samuel the prophet is addressing the Israelites after they have asked for a king. Samuel is troubled by their request, knowing that they are rejecting God's leadership. Despite this, God tells Samuel to listen to the people and anoint a king for them. In verses 3-5, Samuel speaks to the people, calling them to integrity and accountability.
The Message
Verse 3: "Here I am. Witness against me before the Lord and before His anointed. Whose ox have I taken, or whose donkey have I taken, or whom have I defrauded? Whom have I oppressed, or from whose hand have I taken a bribe to blind my eyes with it?" (NKJV)
In this verse, Samuel is essentially saying, "Investigate me! Look at my life and see if I have lived with integrity." He is inviting the Israelites to scrutinize his actions, to see if he has taken anything that doesn't belong to him or oppressed anyone. This is a remarkable display of transparency and accountability.
Verse 4: "They answered, 'You have not defrauded us, nor oppressed us, nor taken anything from anyone's hand.'" (NKJV)
The Israelites respond by acknowledging that Samuel has lived a blameless life. They confirm that he has not taken anything from anyone and has not oppressed anyone.
Verse 5: "And he said to them, 'The Lord is witness against you, and His anointed is witness this day that you have not found anything in my hand.' And they said, 'He is witness.'" (NKJV)
Samuel then says that God is a witness to his integrity, and the Israelites agree. This passage highlights the importance of living a life of integrity, transparency, and accountability.
The Lesson
The message of 1 Samuel 12:3-5 is clear: integrity matters. As followers of God, we are called to live lives that are above reproach. We should strive to be like Samuel, inviting scrutiny and living in a way that honors God. This passage reminds us that our actions have consequences, and we will be held accountable for them.
