1 Samuel 1:27-28 Commentary

The Prayer of Hannah

In 1 Samuel 1:27-28, we find the continuation of Hannah's prayer after God answered her request for a son. These verses are a beautiful expression of gratitude and dedication.

Giving Back to God

1 Samuel 1:27

"For this child I prayed, and the Lord has given me my petition which I asked of Him."

Here, Hannah acknowledges that the child she had been given was an answer to her prayer. She recognizes God's sovereignty and provision in her life. The phrase "I prayed" is emphatic, highlighting Hannah's role as a praying mother. She takes no credit for herself, instead, giving all the glory to God.

The Gift of God

1 Samuel 1:28

"Therefore I have lent him to the Lord; as long as he lives he shall be lent to the Lord." And he worshiped the Lord there.

In this verse, Hannah dedicates her son, Samuel, to the Lord. The phrase "I have lent him" indicates that Hannah sees Samuel as a gift from God, and she is willing to give him back to God. This act of dedication demonstrates Hannah's faith and trust in God's plan for her son.

Lessons from Hannah's Prayer

Hannah's prayer teaches us several valuable lessons:

  • Faith and perseverance: Hannah's prayer was answered because she persisted in her faith, even in the face of disappointment and ridicule.
  • Gratitude and recognition: Hannah acknowledges God's sovereignty and provision in her life, demonstrating a heart of gratitude and recognition.
  • Dedication and sacrifice: By dedicating Samuel to the Lord, Hannah shows us the importance of surrendering our lives and our gifts to God's service.

As we reflect on Hannah's prayer, may we be inspired to deepen our own prayer lives, trusting in God's sovereignty and provision in our lives.
