1 Samuel 18-20 NLT: The Rise of David and the Jealousy of Saul

1 Samuel 18: The Philistines Defeated, Saul's Jealousy Begins

After David's victory over Goliath, the Philistines were defeated, and the Israelites were able to defeat their enemies. King Saul, however, became jealous of David's popularity and fame. The women of Israel sang songs praising David, saying, "Saul has killed his thousands, and David his ten thousands" (1 Samuel 18:7). This sparked Saul's jealousy, and he began to eye David with suspicion and resentment.

1 Samuel 19: Saul's Attempt to Kill David

Saul's jealousy continued to grow, and he became determined to kill David. He ordered his soldiers to arrest David, but David escaped and sought refuge with Samuel in Ramah. Saul's men pursued David, but they were met by the spirit of the Lord, and they were unable to capture him.

1 Samuel 20: Jonathan's Loyalty to David

Meanwhile, Jonathan, Saul's son, had formed a close bond with David. Jonathan realized that his father's jealousy was unjustified and that David was innocent. Jonathan warned David of his father's plans to kill him and advised him to hide in the field. David and Jonathan made a pact, and Jonathan promised to protect David from his father's wrath.
