The Family of Elkanah
Hannah, the wife of Elkanah, is the central figure in this chapter. Elkanah, a Levite from the tribe of Ephraim, lived in Ramathaim-zophim, on Mount Ephraim. He had two wives, Hannah and Peninnah. While Peninnah had children, Hannah was childless.
The Promise of a Son
Every year, Elkanah would take his family to Shiloh to offer sacrifices to the Lord. On one such occasion, Hannah made a vow to God that if He gave her a son, she would dedicate him to the Lord for life. Eli, the priest, saw Hannah praying and thought she was drunk, but Hannah explained that she was praying for a son.
The Birth of Samuel
In answer to Hannah's prayer, she conceived and gave birth to a son, naming him Samuel, which means "heard of God." When Samuel was weaned, Hannah took him to Shiloh and presented him to Eli, dedicating him to the Lord's service.
