1 Peter 1:3-12 Commentary
Joy in the Midst of Suffering
In 1 Peter 1:3-12, the apostle Peter writes to encourage believers who are facing persecution and suffering. Despite their difficulties, Peter reminds them of the incredible blessings they have received in Christ, and the joy that comes from knowing they are securely saved.
A Living Hope
Verse 3: "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead." (NKJV)
Peter begins by praising God for His great mercy, which has given believers a new life in Christ. This "living hope" is not a fleeting or uncertain hope, but a confident expectation of eternal life with God.
An Inheritance Incorruptible
Verse 4: "to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you." (NKJV)
This inheritance is not something that can be lost or corrupted, unlike earthly treasures. It is reserved in heaven, waiting for believers to receive it when they meet their Lord.
Protected by God's Power
Verse 5: "who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time." (NKJV)
Believers are not left to fend for themselves in the midst of suffering. God's power is actively at work, protecting and preserving them until the day of salvation.
Trials Refine Faith
Verse 7: "that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ." (NKJV)
Trials and sufferings are not meant to destroy believers, but to refine their faith, making it more precious than gold. This refining process is necessary to prepare them for the revelation of Jesus Christ.
The Prophets and Angels
Verse 10-12: "Of this salvation the prophets have inquired and searched carefully, who prophesied of the grace that would come to you, searching what, or what manner of time, the Spirit of Christ who was in them was indicating when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ and the glories that follow. To them it was revealed that, not to themselves, but to us they were ministering the things which now have been reported to you through those who have preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven—things which angels desire to look into." Peter reminds his readers that the prophets of old had prophesied about the salvation that believers now enjoy. Even angels are fascinated by the mysteries of God's plan, which have been revealed through the preaching of the gospel.
