1 John 3:9-10: The Marks of a True Christian

In 1 John 3:9-10, the apostle John writes, "**No one who is born of God practices sin, because His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. By this the children of God and the children of the devil are obvious: anyone who does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor the one who does not love his brother." (NASB)

The Assurance of Salvation

In these verses, John emphasizes the assurance of salvation that comes from being born of God. He states that those who are born of God do not practice sin, not because they are sinless, but because God's seed (the Holy Spirit) remains in them. This seed, or the divine nature, is what sets believers apart from non-believers.

The Contrast Between Children of God and Children of the Devil

John also highlights the contrast between the children of God and the children of the devil. He makes it clear that those who do not practice righteousness and do not love their brothers are not of God. In other words, those who do not demonstrate a life of obedience to God and love for their fellow believers are not truly born of God.

The Marks of a True Christian

So, what are the marks of a true Christian? According to 1 John 3:9-10, they are:

1. Freedom from the practice of sin

True Christians do not make a habit of sinning. While they may still sin, they do not willfully continue in sin.

2. Righteous living

Christians are characterized by a desire to live righteously, obeying God's commands and seeking to do what is pleasing to Him.

3. Love for fellow believers

Genuine Christians demonstrate love for their brothers and sisters in Christ.

Conclusion

In conclusion, 1 John 3:9-10 assures us that true Christians are marked by their freedom from the practice of sin, righteous living, and love for fellow believers. As we examine our own lives, may we be encouraged to seek the Holy Spirit's guidance and empowerment to live a life that honors God.
