Love Is Patient and Kind

1 Corinthians 13:4-7 ESV

In the Bible, 1 Corinthians 13 is often referred to as the "Love Chapter." It's a beautiful passage that describes the characteristics of love. In this article, we'll dive deeper into verses 4-7, which reveal the essence of love.

Love Is Patient

"Love is patient..." (1 Corinthians 13:4a ESV)

The Greek word for "patient" is makrothymia, which means "long-tempered" or "slow to anger." This type of patience is not just about waiting, but about enduring difficult circumstances with calmness and composure. It's the ability to bear with others' flaws and mistakes without becoming frustrated or irritated.

Love Is Kind

"...and kind..." (1 Corinthians 13:4b ESV)

Chrestos, the Greek word for "kind," means "useful" or "beneficial." Kindness is about being helpful and generous, looking for ways to benefit others. It's about showing concern for others' well-being and demonstrating a desire to make their lives better.

Love Does Not Envy or Boast

"Love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant..." (1 Corinthians 13:4c-5 ESV)

Love doesn't feel resentful or jealous when others succeed. It's not about competing with others or seeking to elevate oneself above them. Instead, love rejoices with those who rejoice and mourns with those who mourn.

Love Does Not Insist on Its Own Way

"...or rude. It does not insist on its own way..." (1 Corinthians 13:5-6 ESV)

Love is not selfish or demanding. It's not about getting one's own way or imposing one's will on others. Instead, love seeks to understand and respect others' perspectives and needs.

Love Is Not Irritated or Resentful

"...it is not irritable or resentful;" (1 Corinthians 13:7 ESV)

Love doesn't hold grudges or harbor resentment. It's not easily annoyed or provoked, and it doesn't nurse feelings of bitterness or anger.

In these four verses, we see a beautiful picture of love. It's patient, kind, humble, and selfless. Love is not about us; it's about others. As we strive to embody this kind of love, we'll find ourselves becoming more like Christ, who is the ultimate expression of love.
