Introduction

Hold Fast to the Truth (1:13-14)
Paul encourages Timothy to hold fast to the truth of the Gospel, which he had learned from Paul, and to guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who dwells in us (1:14).
Chapter 2
Be Strong in the Grace of Christ (2:1-2)
Paul exhorts Timothy to be strong in the grace of Christ Jesus, which is the power of God that enables us to live a life pleasing to Him.
The Soldier, Athlete, and Farmer (2:3-7)
Paul uses three illustrations to encourage Timothy to persevere in his ministry: the soldier, who must endure hardship; the athlete, who must compete according to the rules; and the farmer, who must work hard to reap a harvest (2:3-7).
The Reward of Perseverance (2:8-13)
Paul reminds Timothy that if we persevere, we will receive a reward from God, which is eternal life. He suffered and was treated as a criminal, but he knew that the Gospel was not bound (2:9).
The Importance of Sound Doctrine (2:14-26)
Paul warns Timothy to avoid quarrels and to correct opponents gently, so that they may come to a knowledge of the truth (2:25). He also reminds Timothy to flee from youthful passions and to pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart (2:22).
Chapter 3
The Last Days (3:1-5)
Paul warns Timothy that in the last days, difficult times will come, and people will become lovers of self, lovers of money, and lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God (3:2).
The Importance of Scripture (3:10-17)
Paul reminds Timothy that all Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness (3:16). He encourages Timothy to continue in what he has learned and to trust in the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make him wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus (3:15).
Chapter 4
The Call to Faithfulness (4:1-5)
Paul charges Timothy to preach the word, to be ready in season and out of season, and to reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching (4:2).
The Final Charge (4:6-8)
Paul knows that his time on earth is coming to an end, and he exhorts Timothy to come to him soon, bringing Mark and the scrolls, especially the parchments (4:9-13).
The Final Greeting (4:9-22)
Paul closes his letter with a final greeting to Timothy, asking him to greet Prisca and Aquila, and the household of Onesiphorus (4:19-22).
