2 Peter 1:5-7 NKJV: The Foundation of Faith

But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, and to perseverance godliness, and to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love. (2 Peter 1:5-7 NKJV)

In this passage, the apostle Peter emphasizes the importance of building a strong foundation of faith. He encourages believers to add different components to their faith, which will ultimately lead to a more mature and effective Christian life.

Faith: The Foundation

Peter starts by emphasizing the importance of faith as the foundation of the Christian life. Faith is the starting point of our journey with God, and it is the basis of our relationship with Him. Without faith, it is impossible to please God (Hebrews 11:6).

Adding Virtue

Once we have established a strong foundation of faith, we need to add virtue to our lives. Virtue refers to moral excellence and goodness. It involves living a life of integrity, honesty, and compassion. As we add virtue to our faith, we become more like Christ, and our character is transformed.

Adding Knowledge

The next component Peter mentions is knowledge. This knowledge is not just intellectual knowledge, but a deep understanding of God's Word and His ways. As we add knowledge to our faith and virtue, we gain a deeper understanding of God's nature and His plan for our lives.

Adding Self-Control

Self-control is the ability to control our thoughts, words, and actions. It involves discipline and restraint, and it is essential for living a life that is pleasing to God. As we add self-control to our faith, virtue, and knowledge, we become more responsible and dependable followers of Christ.

Adding Perseverance

Perseverance is the ability to endure difficult circumstances and to remain faithful to God in the face of trials and tribulations. As we add perseverance to our faith, virtue, knowledge, and self-control, we develop a strong and resilient spirit that can overcome any obstacle.

Adding Godliness

Godliness refers to a deep reverence and respect for God. As we add godliness to our faith, virtue, knowledge, self-control, and perseverance, we develop a deeper sense of awe and worship for our Creator.

Adding Brotherly Kindness

Brotherly kindness refers to the ability to show love and compassion to our fellow believers. As we add brotherly kindness to our faith, virtue, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, and godliness, we become more like Christ, who loves us with an unconditional love.

Adding Love

Finally, Peter mentions love as the culmination of all the other components. Love is the foundation of all Christian virtues, and it is the greatest commandment of all (Matthew 22:37-40). As we add love to our faith, virtue, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, and brotherly kindness, we become more like Christ, who is the embodiment of love.

Conclusion

In conclusion, 2 Peter 1:5-7 provides a roadmap for building a strong foundation of faith. By adding virtue, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness, and love to our faith, we can become more mature and effective followers of Christ. May we heed Peter's exhortation and strive to build a life that is pleasing to God.
