2 Peter 1:5-10 ESV: A Call to Spiritual Growth

In 2 Peter 1:5-10, the apostle Peter writes to encourage believers to grow in their faith and possess certain qualities that are essential for spiritual maturity. This passage is a call to action, urging Christians to make every effort to add certain characteristics to their faith, ensuring that they are not ineffective or unfruitful in their knowledge of Jesus Christ.

Making Every Effort (v. 5)

The passage begins with an exhortation to "make every effort" to add certain qualities to one's faith. The Greek word used here, "spoude," conveys a sense of urgency and diligence. It is not enough to simply possess faith; believers must actively strive to grow and mature in their faith.

The Qualities of Spiritual Maturity (v. 5-7)

Peter then lists seven qualities that believers should add to their faith:

1. Virtue (areten): Moral excellence and goodness.

2. Knowledge (gnosin): A deep understanding of God and His ways.

3. Self-control (egkrateian): The ability to govern one's thoughts, words, and actions.

4. Steadfastness (hupomonen): The capacity to endure trials and persevere in the face of adversity.

5. Godliness (eusebeian): A heart that is fully dedicated to God and seeks to honor Him in all things.

6. Brotherly affection (philadelphia): A deep love and commitment to fellowship with other believers.

7. Love (agape): Unconditional, sacrificial love for others, just as Christ has loved us.

The Result of Spiritual Maturity (v. 8-10)

If believers make every effort to add these qualities to their faith, they will be effective and fruitful in their knowledge of Jesus Christ. This means that their lives will be characterized by:

  • Confirming their calling and election: Their faith will be steadfast and unwavering, demonstrating that they are truly children of God.
  • Never stumbling: They will not be tripped up by sin or temptation, but will instead remain faithful to God.
  • Richly provided for them an entrance into the eternal kingdom: They will be welcomed into heaven with open arms, where they will experience the fullness of God's joy and blessings.

In conclusion, 2 Peter 1:5-10 is a call to spiritual growth, urging believers to make every effort to add certain qualities to their faith. As we strive to develop these characteristics, we will become more like Christ, and our lives will be marked by spiritual maturity and fruitfulness.
