2 Corinthians 5:1-8 Commentary

The Christian's Hope in the Face of Death

In 2 Corinthians 5:1-8, the apostle Paul writes about the Christian's hope in the face of death. This passage is a powerful expression of the confidence and longing that believers have in the promise of eternal life with God.

The Groaning of Creation

In verse 1, Paul says, "For we know that if the tent that is our earthly home is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens." (ESV) Here, Paul contrasts the frailty of our physical bodies (the "tent") with the eternal and imperishable nature of our future heavenly dwelling.

Paul's language is reminiscent of Romans 8:19-22, where he describes the groaning of creation, waiting for the redemption of the sons of God. In the same way, believers groan inwardly, longing to be free from the corruptible and mortal bodies that we inhabit.

The Burden of the Flesh

In verses 2-4, Paul writes, "In this tent we groan, longing to be clothed with our heavenly dwelling—if indeed, when we have taken it off we will not be found naked. For while we are in this tent, we sigh with anxiety; not that we would be unclothed, but that we would be further clothed, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life." (ESV)

The burden of the flesh is a weight that believers carry, and Paul expresses the desire to be free from the limitations and weaknesses of our physical bodies. However, this is not a desire to be unclothed or without a body, but rather to be further clothed with the eternal and imperishable body that awaits us in heaven.

The Confidence of Faith

In verses 5-8, Paul writes, "He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who has given us the Spirit as a guarantee. So we are always of good courage. We know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord, for we walk by faith, not by sight. Yes, we are of good courage, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord." (ESV)

Here, Paul expresses the confidence of faith that believers have in the face of death. We are not afraid of death, because we know that God has prepared us for eternal life. The Holy Spirit, who dwells within us, is a guarantee of this promise.

Paul's confidence is not based on sight, but on faith. We walk by faith, trusting in the promises of God, even when we cannot see the future. And so, we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord, because we know that this is where our true citizenship lies.

Conclusion

In 2 Corinthians 5:1-8, Paul reminds us that as believers, we have a hope that goes beyond this life. We groan inwardly, longing to be free from the corruptible and mortal bodies that we inhabit, and we look forward to the eternal and imperishable body that awaits us in heaven.

May this passage encourage us to live with confidence and hope, even in the face of death, knowing that our true citizenship is in heaven, and that we will one day be at home with the Lord.
