The Assassination of Rwandan President Habyarimana
On 14 April 1993, a tragic event shook the world when Rwandan President Juvénal Habyarimana's plane was shot down, killing him and everyone on board. This event marked the beginning of one of the darkest periods in human history, the Rwandan Genocide.
The Background
In the early 1990s, Rwanda was a country torn apart by ethnic tensions between the Hutu and Tutsi populations. President Habyarimana, a Hutu, had been in power since 1973 and was facing increasing pressure from the Tutsi-led Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) to democratize the country.
The Assassination
On the evening of 14 April 1993, President Habyarimana's private plane, a Dassault Falcon 50, was flying back to Kigali, Rwanda's capital, from a regional summit in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. As the plane approached Kigali International Airport, it was hit by two surface-to-air missiles, causing it to crash into the garden of the presidential palace.
All on board, including President Habyarimana, Burundian President Cyprien Ntaryamira, and several high-ranking government officials, were killed instantly. The assassination was carried out by unknown attackers, but it is widely believed to have been orchestrated by Hutu extremists.
The Consequences
The assassination of President Habyarimana sparked a wave of violence across Rwanda, as Hutu extremists and government-backed militias began targeting Tutsis and moderate Hutus. Over the next 100 days, an estimated 800,000 people, mainly Tutsis and moderate Hutus, were killed in one of the most brutal and efficient genocides in history.
The international community's failure to intervene in the genocide is widely regarded as a grave mistake, and the world was left to wonder how such atrocities could have been prevented.
