1 Timothy 4 Commentary by John MacArthur

Introduction

In 1 Timothy 4, the apostle Paul continues his instructions to Timothy, a young pastor in the city of Ephesus. Paul's letter is a manual for pastoral ministry, and in this chapter, he focuses on the importance of spiritual growth and the dangers of false teaching.

The Importance of Spiritual Growth (4:6-10)

Paul writes to Timothy, "If you instruct the brethren in these things, and devour this doctrine, you will be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished in the words of faith and of the good doctrine which you have carefully followed" (1 Timothy 4:6, NKJV). Paul emphasizes the importance of spiritual growth and maturity in Timothy's life and ministry.

According to John MacArthur, "The phrase 'nourished in the words of faith' refers to the spiritual nourishment that comes from the Word of God. It means to be fed, to be sustained, to be strengthened by the Word."[^1]

The Dangers of False Teaching (4:1-5, 11-16)

Paul warns Timothy about the dangers of false teaching, saying, "Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons" (1 Timothy 4:1, NKJV). Paul is concerned that some will abandon the true faith and follow false teachers who promote demonic doctrines.

John MacArthur notes, "The 'departure from the faith' refers to apostasy, a deliberate rejection of the faith once delivered to the saints."[^1]

Conclusion

In 1 Timothy 4, Paul emphasizes the importance of spiritual growth and maturity in the life of a pastor like Timothy. He also warns against the dangers of false teaching and the need to remain faithful to the true gospel.

As John MacArthur concludes, "The key to effective ministry is not in our own strength or abilities, but in our dependence on the Lord and our commitment to the truth of God's Word."[^1]
