1 Samuel 9-12: The Rise of King Saul
The Anointing of Saul
In 1 Samuel 9-12, we see the rise of King Saul, the first king of Israel. In chapter 9, Saul is introduced as a young man from the tribe of Benjamin, searching for his father's donkeys. On his journey, he meets Samuel, who is instructed by God to anoint Saul as the future king.
The Prophecy of Samuel
In 1 Samuel 10:1-16, Samuel anoints Saul as king, pouring a flask of oil on his head. Samuel prophesies that Saul will be changed into a different person and that God's Spirit will come upon him. Saul is instructed to wait seven days for Samuel in Gilgal, where he will receive further instructions.
The Signs of Confirmation
In 1 Samuel 10:1-7, Samuel gives Saul three signs to confirm his anointing as king:
- The olive tree: Saul will meet three men going up to God at Bethel, who will give him two loaves of bread.
- The terebinth tree: Saul will meet a group of prophets, and the Spirit of God will come upon him, causing him to prophesy.
- The Philistine garrison: Saul will meet a group of Philistines, and he will be told what to do.
The Reign of Saul
In 1 Samuel 11, Saul becomes king, and his first act is to rescue the city of Jabesh-gilead from the Ammonites. The people of Israel demand a king, and Saul is presented as their ruler. In 1 Samuel 12, Samuel addresses the Israelites, reminding them of their history and God's faithfulness. He warns them of the consequences of disobeying God and encourages them to fear and serve the Lord.
Lessons from Saul's Rise to Power
The story of Saul's rise to power teaches us several valuable lessons:
- God's sovereignty: God is in control, and He chooses leaders according to His will.
- Obedience: Saul's success depends on his obedience to God's commands.
- Humility: Saul's humble beginning as a donkey herder contrasts with his later pride and disobedience.
