1 Samuel 3:10-18: The Calling of Samuel
God Speaks to Samuel
In 1 Samuel 3:10-18, we find the story of Samuel's calling by God. Samuel, a young boy at the time, was serving in the temple under the guidance of Eli, the high priest. One night, Samuel heard a voice calling his name, "Samuel! Samuel!" (1 Samuel 3:4). Believing it was Eli who called him, Samuel ran to Eli, only to be told that Eli did not call him.

In verses 11-14, God speaks to Samuel, revealing a prophecy of judgment against Eli's household. God tells Samuel that He will judge Eli's household forever, citing Eli's failure to correct his sons' sins. Specifically, Eli's sons had blasphemed God, and Eli failed to stop them.
God's message to Samuel was a difficult one, as it involved judgment against the very household in which Samuel lived and served. However, Samuel was obedient to God's call, and he delivered the prophecy to Eli.
Eli's Response
Eli's response to the prophecy was astonishing. Instead of becoming defensive or angry, Eli accepted God's judgment, saying, "He is the Lord; let him do what seems good to him" (1 Samuel 3:18). Eli's response demonstrated his humility and faith in God's sovereignty.
