1 Samuel 26 ESV Audio
The Story of David and Abishai
In 1 Samuel 26, we find David having another opportunity to kill King Saul, but he chooses not to. This chapter is a continuation of the story of David's flight from King Saul, who is jealous of David's rising popularity and fears that he will overthrow him.
David Spares Saul's Life Again
David and his men were hiding in the wilderness of Ziph, where Saul and his 3,000 troops were searching for him. One night, David and his nephew Abishai crept into Saul's camp, while the king and his men were sleeping. Abishai suggested that they kill Saul, but David refused, saying, "Do not destroy him, for who can put out his hand against the Lord's anointed and be guiltless?" (1 Samuel 26:9, ESV).
David's Mercy and Faithfulness
Instead of killing Saul, David took his spear and water jug, which were beside the king's head. After they had left the camp, David called out to Abner, Saul's commander, and Abner came to him. David rebuked Abner for not protecting the king, and Abner apologized, saying that he was unaware of David's presence.
David's Faithfulness to God
David's actions in this chapter demonstrate his faithfulness to God and his commitment to not take revenge into his own hands. He trusted that God would vindicate him and had faith that God would fulfill His promises.
