David's Mercy on Saul (1 Samuel 26)
In 1 Samuel 26, we see David's remarkable display of mercy on Saul, the king who had been pursuing him relentlessly. Saul, with 3,000 chosen men, was searching for David in the Wilderness of Ziph. David, with his 600 men, was encamped in the same wilderness.
One night, David and Abishai, his nephew, sneaked into Saul's camp while the king and his men were asleep. Abishai urged David to let him kill Saul, but David refused, saying, "The Lord forbid that I should stretch out my hand against the Lord's anointed" (1 Samuel 26:11, NKJV).
Instead, David took Saul's spear and water jug, leaving evidence that he had been in the camp. The next morning, David called out to Saul's camp, revealing his presence and demonstrating his innocence. Saul, realizing his mistake, confessed his sin and asked for forgiveness. David, in turn, showed mercy to Saul, sparing his life once again.
The Witch of Endor (1 Samuel 28)
In 1 Samuel 28, we find Saul, desperate for guidance, seeking the help of a medium, the Witch of Endor. This was a forbidden practice, as the Israelites were commanded to have no communion with spirits or mediums (Deuteronomy 18:10-11).
The witch, however, was startled when Samuel's spirit appeared before her. Saul, disguised as a commoner, asked the witch to summon Samuel's spirit, hoping to receive guidance on how to defeat the Philistines. Samuel's spirit prophesied Saul's defeat and death, as well as the fall of the kingdom.
