David Saves Keilah

1 Samuel 23:1-5

Saul had just escaped from the Philistines after a long pursuit, and the Philistines had gone back to their own land. Then, the people of Keilah sent a message to David, saying, "The Philistines are fighting against us. Come and save us!" David inquired of the Lord, "Shall I go and attack the Philistines?" And the Lord said, "Go and attack the Philistines, and save Keilah." But David's men said to him, "We are afraid here in Judah. How much more, then, if we go to Keilah against the Philistines!"

David Seeks God's Guidance

David asked the Lord again, "Shall I go and attack the Philistines?" The Lord answered, "Go, attack the Philistines, and save Keilah." So David and his men went to Keilah, fought the Philistines, and brought away their livestock. Then the people of Keilah were rescued, and David killed many Philistines.

Saul Pursues David Again

Saul was told that David had gone to Keilah, and Saul thought, "God has delivered him into my hands, for he has trapped himself by entering a town with gates and bars." Saul summoned the army to go down to Keilah and besiege David and his men. But David knew that Saul was coming to get him, so he inquired of the Lord again.

God's Protection

The Lord said to David, "Leave Keilah, for I will give you into the hands of Saul." So David and his men left Keilah and went elsewhere. Saul was told that David had escaped from Keilah, and he gave up the pursuit.
