1 Samuel 19-20: David's Escape from Saul
David's Narrow Escape
In 1 Samuel 19-20, we see David's precarious situation with King Saul. Saul, who had once been a mentor and friend to David, now sought to kill him out of jealousy and fear. Despite Saul's best efforts to eliminate David, God continued to protect him.
Michal's Warning
David's wife, Michal, learned of Saul's plan to kill David and warned him of the impending danger. Michal helped David escape through a window, and he fled to the city of Ramah to seek the guidance of Samuel the prophet.
Saul's Pursuit
Saul, determined to capture David, sent messengers to Ramah to seize him. However, when the messengers arrived, they were overcome by the spirit of prophecy and began to prophesy, just like the prophets in Ramah. This phenomenon repeated itself three times, with Saul's messengers being met with the same prophetic frenzy.
Saul's Desperation
Desperate to capture David, Saul himself went to Ramah, but he too was overcome by the spirit of prophecy. This humiliating defeat forced Saul to strip off his royal robes and prophesy before Samuel and the other prophets.
Jonathan's Loyalty
Meanwhile, David fled to the wilderness, where he was joined by Jonathan, Saul's son. Jonathan, who had previously made a covenant with David, remained loyal to his friend and warned him of Saul's intentions.
The Bond of Friendship
The bond between David and Jonathan was strong, and they reaffirmed their covenant in the presence of God. Jonathan recognized David's destiny to become the king of Israel, and he requested that David show kindness to his family when he would ascend to the throne.
2 Samuel 9: David's Kindness to Mephibosheth
David's Act of Kindness
Years later, when David became the king of Israel, he remembered his covenant with Jonathan and sought to show kindness to Jonathan's family. He learned that Mephibosheth, Jonathan's son, was still alive and living in Lo-debar.
Mephibosheth's Story
Mephibosheth, who was crippled in both feet, was summoned to the palace and shown great kindness by King David. David restored all the lands that belonged to Saul and assigned Ziba, a former servant of Saul, to take care of Mephibosheth.
