1 Samuel 18:20-27: Jonathan's Loyalty and David's Humility
Jonathan's Loyalty to David
David's popularity among the people of Israel had grown significantly after he defeated Goliath. However, King Saul, who had initially been pleased with David, began to feel threatened by his rising fame. In 1 Samuel 18:20-27, we see Jonathan's loyalty to David and David's humility in the face of Saul's jealousy.
Saul's Jealousy
Saul's jealousy grew more and more intense (1 Samuel 18:20). He became obsessed with the idea that David was trying to take his throne. Saul's servants tried to reason with him, but he refused to listen. His jealousy consumed him, and he ordered his servants to kill David.
Jonathan's Intervention
Jonathan, Saul's son, intervened on David's behalf. Jonathan was deeply committed to David (1 Samuel 18:21). He told his father that David was innocent and that his actions had brought great benefits to Israel. Jonathan reminded Saul that David had risked his life to defeat Goliath, and that his victory had brought great joy to Israel.
David's Humility
David, however, remained humble despite his newfound fame. He hid himself (1 Samuel 18:22) and refused to take advantage of Saul's jealousy. He knew that Saul's anger was unjustified, but he chose not to fight back.
A Bond of Friendship
The bond between Jonathan and David was a powerful one. Jonathan made a covenant with David (1 Samuel 18:23), promising to protect him from his father's wrath. David, in turn, promised to remain loyal to Jonathan.
A Lesson in Humility
The story of 1 Samuel 18:20-27 teaches us an important lesson in humility.
