1 Samuel 17:45-47 Commentary

In this passage, we see the famous story of David and Goliath, where David, a young shepherd, defeats the giant Philistine warrior Goliath. This story is not just a fascinating tale, but it also holds many spiritual lessons for us today.

David's Trust in God

In verse 45, David says, "You come to me with a sword, a spear, and a shield, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of armies, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have insulted." (HCSB) Here, David boldly declares his trust in God, emphasizing that it is not his own strength or abilities that will bring victory, but rather God's power.

This is a powerful reminder for us today. As Christians, we are not to rely on our own strength or abilities to overcome the challenges we face. Instead, we are to rely on God's power and might. As stated in 2 Corinthians 4:7, "But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us."

Goliath's Taunts

In verse 46, Goliath taunts David, saying, "Am I a dog, that you come to me with sticks?" (HCSB) Goliath, confident in his own strength and armor, underestimates David and sees him as no match for him. However, David is not intimidated and remains confident in God's power.

This exchange between David and Goliath is a picture of the spiritual battle we face as believers. Satan and his minions will often taunt and intimidate us, but we must remain confident in God's power and might. As stated in Ephesians 6:12, "For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms."

The Outcome

In verse 47, David says, "All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or by spear that the Lord saves; for the battle is the Lord's, and he will give you into our hands." (HCSB) Here, David prophesies the outcome of the battle, stating that it is God who will bring victory.

This passage reminds us that, ultimately, the battle is not ours, but God's. We are mere instruments in His hands, and it is He who brings the victory. As stated in Exodus 14:14, "The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still."
