1 Samuel 16 Sermon Notes
Title: The Anointing of David Text: 1 Samuel 16:1-13
Introduction
In our previous studies, we learned about the rejection of King Saul and the Lord's instruction to Samuel to anoint a new king. Today, we will explore the fascinating story of how God chose and anointed David, a young shepherd boy, to be the next king of Israel.
The Context
The Rejection of Saul
In 1 Samuel 15, we saw how King Saul disobeyed God's command, leading to his rejection as king. This rejection was not just a personal issue but had a significant impact on the entire nation of Israel.
The Call to Anoint a New King
In response to Saul's disobedience, God instructed Samuel to anoint a new king from the family of Jesse in Bethlehem. This new king would be a man after God's own heart, and God would use him to bring redemption to His people.
The Anointing of David
The Search for a New King
Samuel, obeying God's command, arrived in Bethlehem and invited Jesse and his sons to a sacrificial feast. Samuel met seven of Jesse's sons, but God rejected each of them, saying, "The Lord has not chosen any of these" (1 Samuel 16:10).
The Introduction of David
David, the youngest son, was out tending the sheep. When Jesse presented his sons to Samuel, God rejected them all, saying, "The Lord has not chosen any of these" (1 Samuel 16:10). Finally, Samuel asked if Jesse had any other sons, and Jesse introduced David, the smallest and youngest of his sons.
The Anointing
Samuel anointed David, and "the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David from that day on" (1 Samuel 16:13). David, the young shepherd boy, was now anointed to lead God's people.
The Key Takeaways
God Sees the Heart
God does not look at outward appearances but looks at the heart. While God rejected Saul, He chose David, a humble and faithful shepherd boy.
God's Sovereignty
The story of David's anointing reminds us of God's sovereignty and faithfulness. God is always at work, even when we cannot see what He is doing.
The Importance of Humility
David's humility and dependence on God enabled him to fulfill his calling as king. Let us learn from David's example and cultivate a heart of humility and dependence on God.
Conclusion
The anointing of David is a powerful reminder of God's sovereignty, faithfulness, and ability to raise up leaders who will bring glory to His name. May we, like David, humble ourselves before God, trusting in His sovereignty and provision in our lives.
