1 Samuel 26:20
David and the Spear of Saul
In 1 Samuel 26:20, we find one of the most poignant and revealing moments in the life of King David. The verse reads:
"And David said to Abishai, 'Do not destroy him, for who can stretch out his hand against the Lord's anointed and be guiltless?'"
In this passage, David has just spared the life of his arch-nemesis, King Saul, for the second time. Earlier, in 1 Samuel 24, David had the opportunity to kill Saul when he entered the cave where Saul was relieving himself. Instead, David chose to cut off a piece of Saul's robe, demonstrating his loyalty and devotion to the Lord's anointed.
The Significance of the Spear
Here, in 1 Samuel 26, David is once again faced with the opportunity to eliminate Saul. However, David's response is telling. He asks Abishai, "Who can stretch out his hand against the Lord's anointed and be guiltless?" David recognizes that Saul, despite his flawed and troubled leadership, remains the Lord's anointed, and that to harm him would be to invite God's wrath.
The spear, which has become a symbol of Saul's authority and power, takes on a new significance in this passage. It represents the authority and legitimacy that has been given to Saul by God Himself. By sparing Saul's life, David is acknowledging that power and submitting to God's sovereign will.
A Lesson in Humility and Obedience
