1 Peter 4: Suffering for the Gospel

Living as Exiles

In 1 Peter 4, the apostle Peter continues to encourage believers to live as exiles in a foreign land. As followers of Christ, we are no longer citizens of this world but rather aliens, living as strangers in a land that is not our own. Peter reminds us that our true citizenship is in heaven, and we are merely pilgrims on this earth.

Suffering for the Gospel

In verses 12-19, Peter address the suffering that Christians will face for their faith. He writes, "Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice insofar as you share Christ's sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed." (1 Peter 4:12-13, ESV). Peter encourages believers to rejoice in their sufferings, knowing that they are sharing in Christ's sufferings.

Judgment Begins with the Household of God

In verses 17-18, Peter writes, "For it is time for judgment to begin at the household of God; and if it begins with us, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God? And 'If the righteous is scarcely saved, what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?'" (1 Peter 4:17-18, ESV). Peter reminds us that judgment begins with the household of God, and if we, as believers, are judged, what will happen to those who do not obey the gospel?

Concluding Thoughts

In conclusion, 1 Peter 4 reminds us that as believers, we are living as exiles in a foreign land. We will face suffering and persecution for our faith, but we can rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that we are sharing in Christ's sufferings. Let us remember that judgment begins with the household of God, and let us strive to live a life that honors God, even in the midst of suffering.

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father, help us to remember that we are aliens and strangers in this world. Give us the strength to rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that we are sharing in Christ's sufferings. Help us to honor you, even in the midst of persecution. Amen.
