The Meaning
In these verses, Peter highlights the significance of Christ's sacrifice on the cross. He emphasizes that Jesus, the Just One, suffered on behalf of the unjust (us), to bring us to God. Peter uses the phrase "put to death in the flesh" to describe Christ's physical death, but also notes that He was "quickened by the Spirit." This means that although Jesus died physically, He was made alive by the power of the Holy Spirit.
The second part of verse 19 is often debated among scholars, but one possible interpretation is that Jesus, through the Spirit, preached to the spirits in prison. This could refer to the spirits of people who lived in the days of Noah, who were disobedient and unbelieving (Genesis 6:1-8; 2 Peter 2:5). Peter may be saying that Jesus, having conquered death, proclaimed His victory to these spirits, even in the realm of the dead.
