1 Peter 3:14: Fear Not, But Rather Revere
Don't Fear, But Reverence
In 1 Peter 3:14, the apostle Peter writes, "But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. Do not fear their threats; do not be frightened." (NIV). This verse serves as a powerful reminder to believers to stand firm in their faith, even in the face of persecution and suffering.
The Context
In the preceding verses, Peter encourages believers to live a life of obedience to God, even if it means suffering for doing what is right (1 Peter 2:13-23). He reminds them that they are strangers and pilgrims on this earth, and that their true citizenship is in heaven (Philippians 3:20). Fear Not

Instead of fearing man, Peter encourages believers to reverence God. The Greek word used here for "reverence" (phobos) is the same word used for "fear" in the previous phrase. However, in this context, it carries a positive connotation, implying a deep respect and awe for God's power and majesty.
When we revere God, we acknowledge his sovereignty and authority over our lives. We recognize that he is our Rock, our Refuge, and our Savior (Psalm 18:2). And as we reverence him, we are filled with a sense of peace and confidence, even in the face of adversity.
