1 John 4:7-21 Commentary

The Essence of Love

In 1 John 4:7-21, the apostle John emphasizes the importance of love in the life of a Christian. This passage serves as a pivotal moment in the book, highlighting the core of Christian living: loving one another.

God is Love (1 John 4:7-10)

The apostle John begins by stating that love is not just a feeling or an action, but rather it is a fundamental aspect of God's nature. "Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God." (1 John 4:7, NKJV) This verse sets the tone for the entire passage, emphasizing that love is not just a human emotion, but an inherent characteristic of God.

Love as a Proof of Salvation (1 John 4:11-13)

In the following verses, John explains that the love of God is demonstrated through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. "Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another." (1 John 4:11, NKJV) The apostle argues that if God's love for us is so great that He gave His only Son, then we ought to demonstrate a similar love for one another.

The Spirit, the Water, and the Blood (1 John 4:13-16)

John continues by emphasizing the importance of the Holy Spirit, water, and blood in the life of a Christian. "And there are three that bear witness on earth: the Spirit, the water, and the blood; and these three agree as one." (1 John 4:15, NKJV) This passage is often interpreted as a reference to the three elements of salvation: the Holy Spirit, baptism (water), and the blood of Jesus Christ.

Confidence and Assurance (1 John 4:17-21)

The final verses of this passage convey a sense of confidence and assurance for the believer. "Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness in the day of judgment; because as He is, so are we in this world." (1 John 4:17, NKJV) The apostle John encourages believers to have confidence in their relationship with God, knowing that they are already like Christ in this world.

Conclusion

In conclusion, 1 John 4:7-21 serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of love in the life of a Christian. God's love for us is demonstrated through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, and as believers, we are called to demonstrate a similar love for one another. As we walk in love, we can have confidence and assurance in our relationship with God.
