1 John 4:17-19: The Confidence of God's Love

In this passage, the apostle John writes about the confidence that comes from God's love. He reminds us that our love for God and for others is a reflection of God's love for us.

God's Love Perfected in Us

"Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world." (1 John 4:17)

In this verse, John emphasizes that God's love is not just a feeling or an emotion, but a reality that has taken root in our lives. When we allow God's love to transform us, we become more like Him. We take on His character, and His love becomes our guiding force. This is what it means to have our love made perfect in us.

No Fear in Love

"There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love." (1 John 4:18)

John highlights the contrast between fear and love. Fear is associated with punishment and torment, while love is characterized by confidence and boldness. When we are convinced of God's love for us, we are freed from fear and can approach Him with confidence.

We Love Because God First Loved Us

"We love him, because he first loved us." (1 John 4:19)

This verse is a powerful reminder of the source of our love. We love God and others because God has first loved us. Our love is a response to His initiative, and it is empowered by His love for us.

In summary, 1 John 4:17-19 encourages us to embrace the confidence that comes from God's love. We can have boldness in our relationship with God, free from fear and torment, because we are rooted in His love. As we receive and respond to His love, we are empowered to love others and reflect His character to the world.
