1 John 3:13-18: The Assurance of God's Love
As children of God, we often struggle with feelings of insecurity and doubt. We may question whether we truly belong to God, or whether He truly loves us. In 1 John 3:13-18, the apostle John writes to assure us of God's love and to help us understand the marks of a true Christian.
Do Not Be Surprised
In verse 13, John reminds us not to be surprised when the world hates us. "Do not be surprised, my brothers and sisters, if the world hates you." (1 John 3:13) As followers of Christ, we are no longer of the world, and the world will indeed hate us because of our faith. This hatred is a natural consequence of living a life that is pleasing to God.
Loving in Deed and Truth
In verses 14-15, John explains that our love for one another is a hallmark of our faith. "We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love each other. "This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters." (1 John 3:16)
The Evidence of Love

"If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person?" (1 John 3:17) True love is demonstrated through our actions, not just our words. "Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth." (1 John 3:18)
