1 John 3:13-16: The Mark of a True Christian

In the book of 1 John, chapter 3, verses 13-16, the Apostle John writes about the mark of a true Christian. These verses serve as a reminder of the characteristics that distinguish a believer from the rest of the world.

Do Not Be Surprised

13 Do not be surprised, my brothers and sisters, if the world hates you. (1 John 3:13)

In this verse, John reminds believers not to be surprised when they face persecution and hatred from the world. As followers of Christ, we are called to be separate from the world, and this separation often leads to rejection and hatred.

The World's Hatred

14 We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love each other. Anyone who does not love remains in death. (1 John 3:14)

The world's hatred towards believers is a result of their love for one another. The love that Christians have for each other is a manifestation of the love of God, which sets them apart from the world. This love is not of this world, and therefore, it is often met with resistance and hostility.

A New Commandment

15 Anyone who hates a brother or sister is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life residing in him. (1 John 3:15)

In this verse, John reiterates Jesus' teaching in the Sermon on the Mount, where He stated that hatred is equivalent to murder (Matthew 5:21-22). John emphasizes that believers should not harbor hatred towards one another, as this is contradictory to the teachings of Christ.

The Love of God

16 This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. (1 John 3:16)

John concludes this passage by highlighting the ultimate example of love - Jesus Christ, who laid down His life for humanity. Believers are called to emulate this love by being willing to sacrifice for one another.

In summary, 1 John 3:13-16 serves as a reminder of the characteristics of a true Christian. We are called to love one another, despite the hatred and persecution we may face from the world. By doing so, we demonstrate the love of God, which sets us apart from the rest of the world.
