1 John 3:10-12: The Character of Children of God

The Criteria of Children of God

In 1 John 3:10-12, the apostle John highlights the characteristics that distinguish children of God from children of the devil. This passage serves as a litmus test to determine whose child we are.

Children of God: Love and Do Not Hate

1 John 3:10

"In this the children of God and the children of the devil are manifest: Whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is he who does not love his brother."

Here, John emphasizes that the children of God are characterized by their love for one another. On the other hand, those who do not practice righteousness and do not love their brothers are not of God. The absence of love and righteousness is a hallmark of the children of the devil.

The Importance of Loving One Another

"For this is the message that you heard from the beginning, that we should love one another," (1 John 3:11)

John recalls the message that has been preached from the beginning: we should love one another. This message is not a new commandment but a fundamental principle of the Christian faith. Loving one another is a distinguishing feature of the children of God.

Cain: An Example of Hating One's Brother

"not as Cain, who was of the wicked one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his works were evil and his brother's righteous." (1 John 3:12)

John uses Cain, who murdered his brother Abel, as an example of one who hates his brother. Cain's evil works were in stark contrast to Abel's righteous deeds. This example serves as a warning to believers to ensure that their actions are rooted in love and righteousness, rather than hatred and evil.

Conclusion

In conclusion, 1 John 3:10-12 reminds us that as children of God, we are called to love one another and practice righteousness. We must not hate our brothers and sisters, but rather demonstrate love and kindness towards them. By doing so, we reflect the character of our heavenly Father and distinguish ourselves from the children of the devil.
