1 Corinthians 3:13-15 Commentary

In this passage, Paul continues to address the issue of divisions within the Corinthian church. Specifically, he focuses on the judgment day, when each believer's work will be tested by fire.

The Day of Judgment

"that day" (v. 13) refers to the day of judgment, when every believer's work will be evaluated. This event is not only a future reality but also a present motivation for believers to live lives pleasing to God.

Testing by Fire

"each one's work will become manifest" (v. 13). The Greek word for "manifest" (phaneros) means "to make visible" or "to reveal." On judgment day, the true nature of each believer's work will be revealed.

"for the day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire" (v. 13). Fire is often used in Scripture to symbolize purification and testing (e.g., Malachi 3:2-3; Zechariah 13:9). This fire will test the quality of each believer's work, revealing what is genuine and what is not.

Rewards and Losses

"if the work that anyone has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward" (v. 14). The "foundation" refers to Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 3:11). If a believer's work survives the testing by fire, they will receive a reward.

"if anyone's work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire" (v. 15). If a believer's work is consumed by the fire, they will suffer loss, but they themselves will still be saved. However, their salvation will be "as through fire," implying a narrow escape.

Conclusion

This passage serves as a warning to believers to build their lives on the foundation of Jesus Christ, using materials that will withstand the testing by fire. As believers, we should strive to live lives pleasing to God, building on the foundation of Christ, so that our work will survive the judgment day.
