The Foundation of God
1 Corinthians 3:11-15

The Foundation of God (verse 11)
11 For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.
In this verse, Paul asserts that there is only one foundation, and that is Jesus Christ. This foundation is the cornerstone of our faith, the Rock upon which we stand. The apostle emphasizes that no one can lay another foundation, for Christ is the only one who can provide a solid base for our spiritual lives.
The Quality of Our Work (verses 12-13)
12 If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, 13 their work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light.
Paul continues by highlighting the quality of our work, comparing it to different materials. The gold, silver, and costly stones represent our works that are pleasing to God, while wood, hay, and straw symbolize the opposite. The Day, referring to the Judgment Day, will reveal the true nature of our actions.
The Test of Fire (verses 14-15)
14 If what has been built survives, the builder will receive a reward. 15 If it is burned up, the builder will suffer loss but yet will be saved—even though only as one escaping through the flames.
The apostle introduces the concept of fire, which represents the testing of our works. If our work survives the test, we will receive a reward. However, if our work is consumed by the fire, we will still be saved, but only as if escaping through the flames. This passage serves as a reminder to build our lives on the foundation of Christ, using materials that will withstand the test of fire.
Application in Our Lives
As we reflect on 1 Corinthians 3:11-15, we are called to examine our own lives and the foundations we build upon. Are we constructing our lives on the firm foundation of Jesus Christ, using materials that will withstand the test of fire? Or are we building on shaky ground, using materials that will be consumed by the flames?
May we be encouraged to build our lives on the solid Rock of Christ, using materials that will bring glory to God. For it is only when we build on this foundation that we can be confident that our works will survive the test of fire and receive a reward.
