The Early Life and Education of Anies Baswedan
Anies Baswedan, the 16th Governor of Jakarta, was born on May 7, 1969, in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. He is the eldest of four siblings and was raised in a family that values education and public service. Anies' father, Aminuddin Baswedan, was a civil servant and an educator. This upbringing instilled in Anies a strong sense of responsibility and a commitment to serving the public.
Anies earned his bachelor's degree in History from Gadjah Mada University in 1992. He then pursued his master's degree in International Affairs from the University of Maryland, College Park, USA, in 1997. In 2004, he completed his Ph.D. in Political Science from Northern Illinois University, USA.
Academic and Professional Career
Before entering politics, Anies had a successful academic career. He was a lecturer at the University of Indonesia, the Indonesian Defense University, and the National Defense University. He also served as the Director of the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) from 2007 to 2012.
In 2013, Anies became the Rector of the University of Indonesia, a position he held until 2015. During his tenure, he implemented significant reforms, including the introduction of a new curriculum and the establishment of strategic partnerships with international institutions.
Entry into Politics
Anies' entry into politics began in 2014 when he was appointed as the Minister of Education and Culture in the Working Cabinet of President Joko Widodo. In this role, he implemented several reforms, including the development of a new curriculum and the introduction of a student loan program.
In 2017, Anies resigned as Minister of Education and Culture to run as a candidate for the Governor of Jakarta. He won the election and became the first Governor of Jakarta from outside the political establishment.
