0.1N H2SO4 Preparation for 500ml

Introduction

Hydrochloric acid (H2SO4) is a strong acid widely used in various laboratory applications, including titration, pH adjustment, and chemical reactions. In this article, we will discuss how to prepare 0.1 Normal (N) H2SO4 solution for 500ml.

Materials

  • Sulfuric acid (H2SO4) 95-98% concentration
  • Distilled water
  • 500ml beaker or flask
  • Pipette or burette
  • pH meter or pH paper (optional)

Preparation

To prepare 0.1N H2SO4 solution, follow these steps:

Step 1: Calculate the amount of H2SO4 needed

Molarity (M) of H2SO4 is equal to the number of moles of H2SO4 per liter of solution. Normality (N) is related to the number of equivalents per liter of solution. Since H2SO4 is a diprotic acid, one mole of H2SO4 is equivalent to 2 equivalents.

To calculate the amount of H2SO4 needed, we can use the following formula:

Molarity (M) = Number of moles of H2SO4 / Volume of solution (L)

Normality (N) = Number of equivalents of H2SO4 / Volume of solution (L)

For 0.1N H2SO4 solution, we need:

0.1N = 0.1 x 2 = 0.2 M H2SO4 solution

For 500ml solution, we need:

Number of moles of H2SO4 = Molarity x Volume (L) = 0.2 M x 0.5 L = 0.1 moles

Step 2: Weigh and dissolve H2SO4

Using a balance, weigh 9.8g of H2SO4 (95-98% concentration) accurately.

Step 3: Dissolve H2SO4 in distilled water

Add the weighed H2SO4 to a 500ml beaker or flask. Gradually add distilled water to the beaker while stirring until the acid is completely dissolved.

Step 4: Verify the pH (optional)

Use a pH meter or pH paper to verify that the pH of the solution is around 1.0.

Step 5: Store the solution

Transfer the 0.1N H2SO4 solution to a clean, dry container and store it in a cool place. Label the container with the concentration, date, and any relevant safety information.

Safety Precautions

  • Handle sulfuric acid with caution, as it is a strong acid that can cause severe burns and irritation.
  • Wear protective gloves, goggles, and lab coats when handling the acid.
  • Work in a well-ventilated area, and avoid inhaling the acid fumes.
  • In case of accident, rinse the affected area with plenty of water and seek medical attention immediately.

By following these steps, you have successfully prepared 0.1N H2SO4 solution for 500ml. This solution can be used in various laboratory applications, including titration and pH adjustment.
