0.1N Sulphuric Acid Preparation

Introduction

Sulphuric acid (H2SO4) is a strong acid widely used in various laboratory applications, such as titrations, electrolysis, and catalysis. A 0.1N sulphuric acid solution is a common concentration used in many analytical procedures. In this article, we will discuss the preparation of 0.1N sulphuric acid.

Materials

  • Sulphuric acid (H2SO4) - concentrated (98%)
  • Distilled water
  • Volumetric flask (1 L)
  • Burette or pipette
  • pH meter (optional)

Preparation of 0.1N Sulphuric Acid

Step 1: Calculations

To prepare 1 L of 0.1N sulphuric acid, you need to calculate the amount of concentrated sulphuric acid required. The normality (N) of a solution is defined as the number of moles of solute per liter of solution. Since the molecular weight of sulphuric acid is 98 g/mol, the weight of sulphuric acid required to prepare 1 L of 0.1N solution is:

Weight of H2SO4 = Normality (N) x Molecular weight (MW) x Volume (L) Weight of H2SO4 = 0.1 N x 98 g/mol x 1 L = 9.8 g

Step 2: Preparation

  1. Carefully pour 9.8 g of concentrated sulphuric acid into a 1 L volumetric flask.
  2. Wear protective gloves, goggles, and lab coat to avoid skin contact and eye irritation.
  3. Add a small amount of distilled water to the flask to dissolve the acid. Swirl the mixture to ensure complete dissolution.
  4. Add more distilled water to the flask until the volume reaches 1 L.
  5. Mix the solution thoroughly by swirling and inverting the flask several times.

Step 3: Verification (optional)

Use a pH meter to verify the pH of the prepared solution. The pH of 0.1N sulphuric acid should be around 1.3.

Precautions

  • Handle sulphuric acid with care, as it is a strong acid that can cause severe burns and eye damage.
  • Wear protective gear, including gloves, goggles, and a lab coat.
  • Prepare the solution in a well-ventilated area to avoid inhalation of acid fumes.
  • Dispose of any waste solution and materials according to local regulations and guidelines.

Conclusion

In this article, we have discussed the preparation of 0.1N sulphuric acid solution. By following these steps and taking necessary precautions, you can prepare a high-quality solution for your laboratory applications.
